Carefree and College Life

Amber and I had the great opportunity last night to host two acquaintances/now friends in Atlanta prior to them flying to Haiti on a college spring break mission trip.  This morning, Amber and and I figured the best thing two college students could wake up to would be a full table of hot food.  So, over pancakes, bacon, eggs, toast, OJ, and coffee, Jeff and Conner, who very much fit the IU super-christian-fratter mold, filled us in on what life in Bloomington is like these days…  old bars, new restaurants, fun professors, and great classes etc…

As the breakfast conversation went on, it was really interesting to hear Jeff (who is in the same grad program that I went through) talk about how uncertain he is with what he should do the rest of his life.  Which led Amber and I to offer the same advice, “Don’t worry about that yet.  We still aren’t sure what we want to do with ours.”  Which really has me thinking.

So, here are my questions: I’d love to know how many of you are in the career you started out in after school?  Would your mom say that you’re “using” your degree?  And, if you are thoroughly passionate about what you’re doing right now, when in life did you find that passion?

  1. not doing what i went to school for at all (psychology) but i do love my job and really cant see myself doing anything else right now :)

  2. hmm…degree in finance, not using it. Getting my Master’s in Public Service, hope to use that.

As for what I started out in school, that was dentistry, that answer is obvious…

  3. Degree in advertising… so I’m not using it… although I started off doing so.
I am still not sure what I want to be when I “grow up”. I think a Mom. I’ve been working on that degree over the last 5 months.

  4. degree in public relations – and feel like i’m using it as a mom. i’m the spin doctor trying to get a toddler to obey. just kidding! used it for 1st three years out of school and was a good springboard into other marketing jobs.

  5. I’m doing exactly what I got my degree in – structural engineering. I like it – I like the challenges, the learning something new everyday, knowing that I have a bright future if I stay in this field. But I’ve definitely been wondering what will happen to my career when we start having kids. I hate the idea of dropping them off into daycare, but who does? If we had a baby soon, we couldn’t keep the things we have and the lifestyle we keep without my paycheck as well. If I leave the field to have kids, them come back, how much will the industry have changed? How much will I have forgotten? So, it’s definitely something that I’m praying about. We’ll find out more when it happens! But until then, I’m loving my job and my role as a wife and the people that I meet. And we’re trying to save as much money as possible and pay off as many things as possible! I missed you guys at Maddox’s b-day party. Hope things are going well! ~jenni
